Tie-breaks: what happens when hands are the same type?
- Hand type first: the higher-ranked hand in the list above wins.
- Then the ranks that make the hand: start with the key cards. With two pair, for example, compare the higher pair first, then the lower pair.
- Then the kickers: if the key cards match, compare the remaining cards one by one.
- Suits never count: if all five cards match in rank, the pot is split.
- Only the best five cards play: in Texas Hold'em you choose the best five of your seven cards, and the other two never matter.
Both players have a pair of aces with a king kicker, so it comes down to the second kicker. Q beats J, so Player A wins.
FAQ
Hand rankings FAQ
Does a flush beat a straight?
Yes. A flush beats a straight. In standard Texas Hold'em a flush is less likely than a straight, so it ranks higher.
Does a full house beat a flush?
In standard Texas Hold'em a full house beats a flush. In Short Deck Hold'em it is the other way round: a flush beats a full house.
Can an ace count as 1?
Yes. In a straight the ace can be high (10-J-Q-K-A) or low (A-2-3-4-5), but it cannot wrap around to make Q-K-A-2-3.
Do suits have a ranking in poker?
No. In Texas Hold'em and Omaha all suits are equal. If two hands have exactly the same ranks, they split the pot.
How do you compare two hands that both have one pair?
Compare the pairs first. If the pairs are the same, compare the three remaining cards (kickers) in order. If everything matches, the pot is split.
